Solstice Celebrations to Use Your Miles On

Who doesn't love to travel? With unlimited resources, my wife always claims she would travel the world repeatedly. While I'm not that much of a fanatic, I do love to hop on a plane and take a trip to interesting and sometimes exotic places. Certainly, getting away from the daily grind often provides enough respite to aid in the maintenance of mental sanity. That said, there are several solstice celebrations occurring worldwide this coming week which could prove inflicting for the travel bug. And for those with airline rewards credit cards, it'll make it that much easier to cast-off all responsibility for a few days and get outta Dodge.

How to Maximize your Airline Miles

Yowza! Have you looked at airfares lately? It turns out that the gas crisis doesn't hurt consumers just at the gas station; the airport has also become a place of despair for cost-conscious travelers. With airlines having to pay more and more on jet fuel, they have graciously handed the bill over to passengers to defray the costs. With these sky-high airfares, there never has been a better time to use your airline miles to fly you from point A to B.

Capital One Ends Match My Miles: 1 Billion Miles Are Gone

Capital One announced early this morning that they've hit the one billion mile mark and have brought the Capital One Venture card "Match My Miles" program to a close. Originally slated to run through May 13th, the offer was obviously popular as it took less than a month to match all the free miles they were willing to give away. At a cost to Capital One of $.01 per mile, that's a mere $10 million, not including whatever they paid Alec Baldwin to have his face plastered all over your TV throughout March Madness.  Based upon the incredible popularity of the card, it sounds like it was money well spent.

Capital One Venture Card Now Matches 100,000 Miles

UPDATE: This offer is no longer available. If you're a fan of flying Southwest, you're probably also a fan of their easy-to-understand frequent flyer program— Rapid Rewards. Fly 8 roundtrips anywhere, and get one roundtrip free. Couldn't have been much more simple than that! Unfortunately, as of March 1st, Southwest's frequent flier program just got a lot more complicated. The major change is that they will now issue points instead of credits, and your points will have different values depending upon what type of fare you choose for your award. I'm not a big-time Southwest flier, but I think it's safe to say that a lot of their customers won't be happy with this change. I've had several friends already talk about getting rid of their Southwest Rapid Rewards credit cards since they are moving to a new points-based system too. What I've been telling them is that if you're looking for a new airline rewards credit card, you should really check out this huge promotion that Capital One is starting today for its Capital One Venture Rewards card.
