Weekly Tip: Notify your card issuer if your name or address changes.

If you are in the process of a big change, it’s very easy to be too caught up to even think about your credit card issuers. However, it is very important to notify them in the event of a name change or an address change.

Without notifying your credit card issuers prior to an address change, the card issuer will continue sending your bills to the previous address. You may then miss important payments, hurting your credit. Plus, this opens you up to the possibility of identity theft. Your personal information, including your account numbers and payment history, is now compromised. And if it comes into the wrong hands, you’ll end up with the hassle of dealing with unauthorized transactions and identity theft.

When it comes to a name change, it is also important to notify your card issuer. The reason is that it can change the accuracy of your credit report. By using two different names on credit cards, the credit bureaus will not know that you are one individual. They may then take one as a fraud or assume that you are separate individuals. By letting the credit card issuer know your name has changed, you will be able to use both as part of your credit history.
