Weekly Tip: Be careful of online scams on Cyber Monday.

Today is Cyber Monday, and that means lots of people will be buying online. And while there might be plenty of good deals, there are also a lot of online scams. So before you buy just anything, it is important to make sure you are not falling victim to a crime.

Here are some tips to help you shop best:

  • Be smart before purchasing. Does the offer seem too good? Is no other online retailer offering a similar deal? Some scammers may try to trick desperate shoppers by offering unbelievable, one of a kind deals for impossible to get gifts. By doing your research before buying, you should know whether the website is a legitimate retailer or not.
  • Buy only from secured websites. Making a purchase from an unprotected website means that hackers can easily steal your personal information and infect your computer with malware. Check to make sure the site is secured by looking for https in the URL and a lock icon.
  • Use your credit card, not debit card, when making a purchase. Credit cards offer much more fraud protection under the federal law; so in case you do fall victim to an online scam, you’ll be able to get your money back.
