Credit Card Rewards: Are They Taxable?

We've seen some great credit card sign-up bonuses hit the market so far this year. In fact, some have been worth more than $500 to new cardholders.  Hopefully you've been able to take advantage of at least one and are expecting either a big cash back check or a free holiday vacation using all the rewards points you've banked. If you are expecting a large cash back check from your credit card company, you may also be wondering if Uncle Sam will want his piece of it next tax season too.  After all, if there's anything the government claims it needs more of these days, it would be tax revenues!  So, does the IRS actually consider your credit card rewards to be taxable income?

New Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card: 40,000 Sign-up Bonus

I mentioned in a January blog post that the 50,000 point sign-up bonus for the Chase Sapphire Preferred Card would likely get the axe before the 2nd quarter of 2012. Well, it was axed as I expected, but the card offer that took it's place is surprisingly not as bad as I originally thought it would be.

Chase Sapphire Preferred: 50,000 Bonus Now a "Limited Time Offer"?

In May of 2011 the Sapphire Preferred® Card began offering 50,000 bonus points to new cardholders who spent $3,000 within the first 3 months. Chase has been running this same promotion ever since, but the strange thing is we recently received notice that the wording "Limited Time Offer" must be inserted into their marketing copy. I'm not exactly sure what the reasoning is for the change or if this promotion will end very soon, but what I can say is I've actually been surprised the deal has been running for so long. Most deals like this don't last for almost a year, so I wouldn't count on it lasting much longer in 2012. In fact, word on the street is that it may get pulled sometime before the 2nd quarter. So why should you care?
