Skimming devices are gaining prominence in Arizona

While identity thieves all over the country are beginning to employ skimming devices to perpetrate their crimes, the problem has become particularly widespread in Arizona.

According to state Attorney General Terry Goddard, skimming devices - small pieces of electronics that read and store credit card information for later use in identity theft - have been popping up all over the state in recent months. Goddard's office noted that skimmers have recently been found in machines at two banks in Scottsdale and more have been found at one bank's branches all over the state.

"Skimming is simply theft by another name," Goddard said. "I urge consumers who are victims of skimming to report it immediately to law enforcement and their bank, but also to the Attorney General’s Office."

Consumers should also be aware that some identity thieves have been able to affix a thin sheet of plastic over the keypad, which records an unsuspecting user's PIN. Others have been able to aim small cameras at the ATM so that it can both record the keypad and get an image of the card being used.
