Many consumers who have tried to find cheap or free street parking in San Francisco might have been frustrated in the past when they had to pay with spare change. But a new movement will change all that.

According to a report from the San Francisco Chronicle, the city introduced a small number of parking meters that not only accept coins, but also debit and credit cards for payment. They will also eventually take the city's prepaid parking cards. While only 190 have gone up for the first wave of the new project, it will eventually use about 5,100, which will cover roughly 20 percent of the parking in eight of the city's neighborhoods.

"This is about more effectively managing parking in San Francisco and achieving our goals of reducing congestion and pollution and making it more convenient to park," Nathaniel Ford, executive director of the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency, told the paper.

A report in the San Jose Mercury News said that the study will also use sensors embedded in the ground, which will monitor empty spaces as the city adjusts rates and time limits to see how long a vehicle stays in a spot.
