Credit report can influence job prospects

Employers may ask to see person's credit report when hiring.

A credit report can affect more than just a person's ability to get a loan or credit card. It also has the potential to play into getting a job.

According to a recent story from Toledo, Ohio television station WTOL, some companies will ask permission to view a person's credit report before hiring them. This is especially true if the position available involves dealing directly with money.

"Basically, an employer wants to make sure an employee doesn't steal," the story noted. "The report's payment history shows if someone has kept their financial commitments."

If they haven't been able to keep up on their payments, the company may see them as more likely to steal from work in order to make ends meet.

Of course, there is a certain amount of irony presented by this scenario. People may be having a hard time paying their bills because they can't find a job. If having financial difficulties keeps them from getting a job, how will they ever be able to get out of debt?

In order to combat this vicious cycle, a number of states have moved to limit the practice, while legislators at the federal level are also considering a measure that would cut back on credit checks tied to employment.
