Arkansas correctional system allows online credit card payments

Instead of mailing in payments for their fees, offenders in Arkansas are now able to settle them with a credit card online.

Rather than being handcuffed by payment restrictions, a new program allows people to utilize the convenience a credit card offers.

The Arkansas Department of Community Correction recently began to offer offenders the ability to pay a number of fees with a credit card through the state's website, www.arkansas.gov. Through the service, fees associated with things like monthly supervision or restitutions can be taken care of with a credit card account.

G. David Guntharp, director of the department, said that the office is "pleased" to be able to give offenders the chance to pay their debts in such a convenient way. Prior to the service, offenders had to pay their fees through the mail.

"This service will also create efficiencies for our agency by reducing staff time spent manually processing paper money orders sent by mail," Guntharp said.

Correctional organizations are not the only state entities that are allowing consumers to pay their bills through online credit card transactions. Municipalities across the country have enabled epayments for things like water bills and garbage collection.
