Cardholders will be able to earn bonus points through volunteering.
Many people sign up for credit cards because of the rewards they offer - travel points, money back or discounts. But a new twist might have some signing up for cards because of what they help give to others.
American Express cardholders now have the opportunity to do some good as they earn more rewards points. The company recently announced it is partnering with TakePart, which is a social action network. Through the partnership, cardholders will be able to earn certificates for Membership Rewards Bonus Points.
The partnership between the organizations is part of the Members Project initiative and marks a cooperative effort that will last a number of years.
"American Express and TakePart have a vision and are deeply committed to empowering people to successfully do something bigger," said Nancy Smith, a vice president with American Express.
Along with taking part in volunteer efforts, account holders who register with the program will be able to vote on which causes they feel American Express should donate to.
Similar efforts to help worthy causes have been tied to the company's rewards program. For example, card holders can use rewards points in order to help efforts in Haiti and Chile, both of which recently faced powerful earthquakes.
