American Express Credit Card News

American Express announced Monday that they would be selling 50% of their Global Business Travel division to an investor group for $900 million. The purchase would go to investors led by Certares, a group that includes the government of Qatar and the money management giant BlackRock. This deal, once completed in the second quarter, will conclude American Express’ plans to separate corporate travel while still keeping it under the American Express Global Business Travel brand.

American Express has introduced the Amex EveryDay Credit Card, a no fee rewards credit card redefining the Amex brand. The card was announced on Sunday’s Oscar broadcast with an ad campaign featuring Tina Fey using her Amex card for everyday things (at the drugstore, food truck, dry cleaner, grocery checkout). Like Tina Fey’s activities suggest, this new card is targeted towards the everyday spenders, or according to the New York Times, the “multitasking, carpool-driving, Starbucks-hopping, grocery-shopping mom.”

American Express recently unveiled plans to start requiring that its various partners be able to accept EMV-enabled cards within the next few years, as the global payments community moves toward the new, more secure type of technology, the company announced. Under its new EMV acceptance requirements, payment processors will have to be able to process this type of transaction by April 2013.
