Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus Card: 50,000 Bonus is Back!

(Note: This offer is no longer available.)

I reviewed the latest version of the Southwest Rapid Rewards Plus credit card just over a month ago.  If you missed it, my main point in that review was if you could manage to wait for a better offer to come along from Southwest later this year, then you should. Well, I love it when I'm right!

The Southwest Airlines Rapid Rewards Plus Card is back again with a big 50,000 point bonus for new cardholders, but that's not all.  The annual fee will remain at $69 this time, instead of the previous $99, making this an even better deal than the one we saw earlier this year before the bonus was cut back to 25,000 points. So, for those of you that wisely chose to wait for the better deal, it's here.  I think this is a good as you're going to see for quite some time. Here's a quick review of the most important details:

  • Annual fee is $69
  • 50,000 bonus points after your first purchase (Worth over $800 in Wanna Get Away Fares)
  • 2 points per dollar spent on Southwest Airlines purchases and Rapid Rewards hotel or car rental partner purchases
  • 1 point per dollar spent on everything else
  • 3,000 point anniversary bonus (Worth $50 in Wanna Get Away Fares)
  • Redemption value is 40% cheaper than most travel rewards cards.  6,000 points will get you a $100 ticket, which is a great value.  Most airline cards require 10,000 points for a $100 ticket.

If you fly Southwest a lot and have just been waiting to jump on the best promotion possible, this is definitely the one to consider finally pulling the trigger on.  I really doubt we'll see a lower annual fee or better bonus promotion anytime soon. Even if you don't particularly like flying Southwest Airlines, maybe now's a good time to think about why that is?  Is it just because you like having an assigned seat?  While I personally like having an assigned seat too, when I weigh that against no change fees, free baggage check, unlimited reward seats and no blackout dates, dealing with choosing my own seat doesn't seem quite that bad anymore.
