We haven't broken down American Express cards exclusively in a while, which is a shame because right now these are offers are some of the very best available on the credit card market today. Whether you spend most of your monthly paycheck on gas and groceries, business expenses or something else, AmEx credit cards offer something for each kind of consumer - albeit with good to excellent credit.

Here are the 5 best credit cards from American Express in 2013, based on category...

Best Overall Offer - Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express is our pick for the best overall credit from American Express in 2013. It starts with the excellent bonus cash program they offer to members, which includes 6 percent cash back at US supermarkets up to $6,000 per year in purchases, 3 percent at US gas stations and select department stores, and 1 percent on everything else.

There's a $75 annual fee, but there's also a 12 month zero interest introductory period applied to new purchases. For consumers interested in the most cash back for gas and groceries, you really can't do better than this card from AmEx.

The "sister" card to the above Blue Cash card is the Blue Cash Everyday® Card from American Express. This card offers members 3 percent cash back at US supermarkets (again up to $6,000 per year in purchases), and 2 percent cash back at US gas stations and select department stores, plus 1 percent on other purchases.

This is the best no annual fee credit card offer from AmEx because for users that carry no balance, this card is free to carry. The introductory period includes no interest for 12 months on new purchases, and this is another of our recommended credit cards for gas and groceries.
